GRUNDOBURST - Five strong models

Brochure

When replacing pipes with the static bursting method the GRUNDOBURST system has proven to be the right choice. Five models in different power classes are available. The GRUNDOBURST system consists of a robust rig, the TT hydraulic power unit, the QuickLock bursting rods and the bursting tools. The GRUNDOBURST is ready for action very quickly and easy to operate which results in minimum setup times. Depending on the jobsite conditions up to 200 metres of pipes can be replaced per day.

  1. = Guiding head with attached
    QuickLock bursting rods
  2. = Support plate
  3. = Telescopic supports
  4. = Foot plate for the operator
  5. = Operating panel
  6. = Foot pedal
  7. = Hydraulic unit

The bore rig is telescopic and can be extended hydraulically from 1.20 m to 1.90 m as a support in the front of the pit wall. The bore rig is fastened securely to give the rods a sure guidance. The operator stands on top of the unit and not at its side, so the pit needs to be no wider than 60 cm. It is clever to install the starting pit halfway between two target pits, so you can work in both aligning directions from one pit without having to change the position of the bore rig. After the QuickLock bursting rods have been pushed into the first main they are pulled back with the new pipe attached and pushed into the opposite main without having to be disassembled.

This saves you a further working step, lengths of more than 200 m are easily achieved. Laterals require intermediate pits. Slight bends of the old line are no problem for the supple QuickLock bursting rods. .

The ladder-shaped QuickLock bursting rods are not screwed, but simply clicked together, absolutely stable towards pulling and pushing. This saves a lot of time, because the thrusting and pulling in process is not interrupted. Compared with the 70 cm long QuickLock bursting rods, it takes a lot of time to screw and unscrew conventional round threaded rods. Also, the power is not safely transmitted, not to mention wearing out the threads with numerous screwing operations. Also the threads inevitably get dirty.

Obstacles in the old line can be overcome with the available thrust force, 275 or 610 kN, depending on the model. A winch is not required for static pipe bursting. When pushing in or pulling back the rods, you can switch over from manual to automatic mode. This saves time and a second operator.

After the rods have been pushed in, the bursting operation commences with the pulling in of the pipe. In the target pit, the guiding head is replaced by a cutting tool with expanding head and the new pipe attached. A joint makes coupling with the pipe string easier, and guides it in the required radius. The old pipe is destroyed by the cutting tool running ahead when the rods are pulled back. The expanding head, following immediately, pushes the shards of the old pipe away, expands the bore hole and smoothes the bore channel. To make the following pipe assembly easier, the cutting tool and the expanding head with the pipe can be pulled through the frame of the bore rig right into the pit. You can pull in the pipe straight from the pipe coil, welded together as a pipe string, or as a short pipe.

The advantages at a glance:

  • applicable in sensitive areas without dynamic impact to the ground
  • one machine for pipes from ND 80 upwards
  • also suitable for renewing steel pipes and ductile cast iron pipes
  • jointed QuickLock bursting rods
  • no time-consuming screw thread turning of the rods, but simple QuickLock coupling
  • stable thrust and pull connection
  • high thrust and pull back force
  • very simple handling (only two operators necessary)
  • short setup time - simple installation
  • 150 - 200 m daily capacity
  • easy transportation on a small truck permits taking a PE pipe coil trailer along at the same time
  • PE-pipes can be pulled in soil-free directly from the hosereel

Renewal of pressure pipes

When pulling the rods back the cutting tool at the forefront cuts the old pipe. The following expander pushes the old cut pipe and fragments aside, expands the bore hole and smoothes and seals the existing pipe bore length. To simplify the tool retrieval later on, the cutting tool and the expanding cone can be pulled into the pit within the extension docking frame of the rig. The pipe is pulled in either directly from the pipe coil or as a welded pipe string.

Each machine is only as good as its tooling

During the pushing-in process the QuickLock bursting rod is guided into the old pipe. The (extendable) pear shaped lead-in guide rod is of great assistance, as it cannot get caught or jammed on the old pipe joint edges. There is sufficient thrust force provided to overcome some of the internal pipe obstacles. Various types of cutting and bursting tools are necessary, depending on the type of pipe material to be burst. Brittle materials (concrete, clayware, asbestos cement) can be broken into fragments with simple bursting and expander tools, steel, grey cast and plastic pipes require a special blade technique, which can cut open the old pipe and expand and is also capable of destroying inline sockets and repair clamps. Due to the special blade construction the optimal cutting geometry is achieved, so that the cutting process clearly requires a lower pulling force. The expander pushes the old pipe into the surrounding soil of the old pipe line, making enough space for the new pipe. Expanders and pipe pullers are available for all prevalent pipe diameters.
